St. Sophia Cathedral

Named in honor of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev was founded in 1037 and has been altered extensively since it was constructed. In its original configuration, it had thirteen domes, twelve piers, a nave with an apse at its eastern end, and eight aisles also terminating in apses. It is surrounded by two-tier galleries from three sides; on the inside there are 11th century mosaics and frescos.
